Objective:

The PROLIGHT-IAPP project aims at advancing the research and development in the area of visual media through developing modern signal processing methods for ultra-realistic light field displays. The project suggests forming a strategic intersectoral partnership between two entities: the Department of Signal Processing at Tampere University of Technology and the SME Holografika, with the aim to elevate to the next level of visual media experience through the mechanisms of advanced research training, career development and knowledge exchange. In a joint research concept, the project partners adopt the notation of light field as the most complex phenomena carrying information about visual scenes and whose reproduction brings the desired higher realism. The research programme addresses the problems of capture, analysis, modelling, compression and rendering of light fields of real-world scenes, so to support the further development of the light-field display technologies and to ensure an enhanced user experience. The approach makes case of state-of-the-art displays being developed by Holografika and while tailoring capture and compression methods for them, aims also at advancing the theory of light-field modelling and its practical application on next-generation 3D displays.
The knowledge-of-transfer programme relies on the complementary expertise of the two partners and effectively supports the ambitious research through six two-way secondments of mixture of researchers within the consortium and three external recruitment of experienced researchers. Training activities in the form of advanced courses and two summer schools and networking activities in the form of four workshops are planned for ensuring project-specific as well as broader training of the people involved. The project results shall bring healthy and highly-realistic visualization of real-world 3D scenes on light-field displays and will strengthen the European position in this emerging field of research.

 Projects General

The company won important national and EU grants that allowed to accelerate the R&D work to create the next generation high-resolution monitor type display and a wall-size 3D projector system. Holografika`s research team has actively been involved in the continuous development of the theory and practice of real-time holographic displays. Along with the technologies used in the successive 3D display generations the company has started to develop related 3D technologies, like 3D acquisition, 3D compression and possible 3D formats.
